Education and Training

Geriatrics Education within the School of Medicine

The Division of Geriatric Medicine offers educational programs for students within the School of Medicine that are designed to prepare them to meet the growing need for healthcare for older adults.

Geriatrics Course

The Interprofessional Geriatric Cours is a week-long geriatrics course that is a compulsory component of medical students’ curriculum. Because of the team-oriented nature of geriatrics care needs, this course is open to all Schools within the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences, and is a required course in several other programs. Nurse practitioner, physical therapy, pharmacy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, social work, nutrition and dental students regularly participate in the course.

Geriatrics Area of Concentration

Division faculty also lead a novel Geriatrics Area of Concentration (AOC) for medical students that is designed to spark interest in the effects of age on health and healthcare. This curriculum track is equivalent to a “Geriatrics major,” and is a four-year program that offers mentorship, leadership opportunities, clinical experience, the Macy Course, and the opportunity to receive special funding for a scholarly project. The Geriatrics AOC also offers an interdisciplinary curriculum for nursing and pharmacy students.
