FACULTY

Shahzad Ahmad, MBBS, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Ahmad received Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Ayub Medical College in Abottabad, Pakistan. He spent several years working as a house officer and medical officer in Pakistan before completing his internship at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA. Dr. Ahmad recently completed his residency at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, PA.

Christine M. Glaser, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine in the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics. Dr. Glaser received a BA in chemistry and Spanish from Hope College in Michigan and went on to earn her MD from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine. Dr. Glaser did her preliminary medical internship at the University of Nevada School of Medicine Renown Medical Center and VA Sierra Nevada Hospital. She came to UPMC to complete her internal medicine residency and has been a fellow  in Hospice and Palliative Care for the past year.

Anita B. Lyons, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Lyons received a BS in chemistry and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC.

Thomas R. Radomski, MD, MS, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine.  Dr. Radomski earned his BS in molecular biology and political science, as well as an MS in clinical research from the University of Pittsburgh. He received his MD from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Dr. Radomski completed his internal medicine residency and served as Chief Resident. He recently completed his general internal medicine fellowship at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Salah Ud Din Safi, MBBS, Dr. Safi completed undergraduate work at Islamia College Peshawar in Pakistan and received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Khyber Medical University in Pakistan. Dr. Safi was a resident in internal medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine before joining the Division.

Nikhal Seth, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as ?  Dr. Seth received his MD from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He recently completed his internal medicine residency at UPMC.

Alfred Shoukry, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Shoukry completed his undergraduate work at Northwestern University where he received a BS in biomedical engineering and a BA in biology. He obtained his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at UPMC. He spent the past year as a hospitalist at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Neal Spada, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Spada received a BS in chemistry and pre-medicine at Pennsylvania State University and his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He recently completed his internal medicine residency at UPMC.

Brielle M Spataro, MD, MS, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr. Spataro received a BS in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an MD from Drexler University College of Medicine, and an MS in medical education from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC and recently finished her general medicine/ women’s health fellowship at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Leigh Klaus Swartz, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Swartz received a BA in chemistry and Spanish from Southern Methodist University and an MD from Baylor College of Medicine. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC.

Andrew Trifan, MD, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. Dr. Trifan received his BS in biology from the University of Pittsburgh and his MD from Drexler University College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency in the generalist track at UPMC.

FELLOWS

Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars (ACES) Fellowship Program

Jill Allenbaugh, MD, received a BS in chemistry from Drexel University in Philadelphia and an MD in 2013 from New York Medical College. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC in June 2016. 

Eileen Bonifacino, MD, completed a BA in biology and Spanish from Swarthmore College and an MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC in June 2015 and served as Chief Resident this past year..

Andrea Carter, MD, received a BS from Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering and an MD from Northwestern University. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC and served as Chief Resident this past year.

Elizabeth Eden, MD, earned a BS in physiology and neurobiology, as well as and MD from the University of Maryland. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC.

Sarah Jones, MD, received her BS in chemistry and justice and peace studies from Creighton University, an MS in toxicology from the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health, and an MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC.  

Tanya Nikiforova, MD, completed a BA in educations studies and psychology at Swarthmore College and an MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency in the generalist track at UPMC and has spent the past year as a hospitalist physician at UPMC Presbyterian/ Shadyside.

Rachel Vanderberg, MD, obtained a BS in biology, a BA in Spanish literature, and an MD from University of Virginia. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC and has spent the past year as a hospitalist at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.

Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship

April Christensen, MD, received a BS from the University of Nebraska and an MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt.

Tara Cook, MD, earned a BS in mathematical science and nuclear engineering from West Point Military Academy and an MD from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed a preliminary year residency in internal medicine at the University of Maryland and went on to complete her residency in neurology from the University of Iowa.

Taylor Lincoln, MD, received a BS from Boston College and her MD from the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine. She recently completed her internal medicine residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Justin Yu, MD, received a BA from Drew University and an MD from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine-pediatrics residency at UPMC where he served as Chief Resident.

STAFF

Natalie Vazquez, MFA, joined the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) in March 2016 as an Instructional Media Designer. Natalie earned an MFA in film and digital technology from Chatham University. Her professional skills include filmmaking, motion graphics, graphic design, and photography. Natalie works closely with ICRE faculty instructors to create online content for ICRE courses and related training programs. She plays a key role in the transformation of the traditional ICRE curriculum into online and hybrid courses.    

José G. Luiggi-Hernández, MPH, joined the Qual EASE team with the Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC) Data Center in February 2016 as a Qualitative Research Assistant. José earned his master’s degree in public health at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, and studied psychology as an undergraduate at the same institution’s Rio Piedras campus.

Flor de Abril Gonzalez, MPH, joined the Qual Ease team as a Research Assistant in March 2016. She earned dual master’s degrees from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom and the University of Pittsburgh, where she also completed two certificates in health equity and evaluation of public health promotion, as well as health education. Her interests revolve around issues of health disparities as they relate to women’s health and minorities and the improvement of health programs through program evaluation.

David Sever, RN, MSN, ACNS-BC, joined Shea Medical Center in May 2016 as the Diabetic Educator. David received his BSN from Northwest Nazarene University in 2002 and his MSN from Duquesne University in 2008. David worked in abdominal transplant at UPMC Presbyterian for a year before moving to Shadyside where he worked in telemetry and was a clinician in pulmonary medicine. David is also a Major in the Air Force Reserve and has completed two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lisa Mueser, RN, CHPN, joined the CONNECT study as the RN Project Manager

Terri Bathory, RN, BS, MSED, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine in October 2015 as a Diabetic Educator. Before joining our team, Terri worked at HRC Manor Care as an Education Transition Nurse.

Kerri Hochberger, RN, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine in October 2015. Kerri is currently a floating nurse for each of our clinics. Before joining our team, Kerri worked for UPMC NeuroTrauma Research for five years.

Karen Franklin, RN, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine in December 2015. Karen is a clinic nurse. Before joining our team, Karen worked for UPMC Children’s Adolescent Clinic for 24 years.

Renee Schantz, LPN, joined the Division of General Internal Medicine in November 2015. Renee is the clinic LPN. Before joining our team, Renee worked for Loving Care Home Health Care.

Twanda Johnson and Avery Smith-Griffith are joining our team here at General Internal Medicine in June 2015 as MA’s for the Clinic.
