Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations Offers Thanks

The Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations (PHCUP) wishes to express its thanks to everyone involved in two recent fundraising events.

The PittMed student volunteer groups of the Health Outreach and Education Project (HOEP) and SALUD (Students and Latinos United against Disparities), raised just over $7,000 during this year’s Live and Silent Auction held in January. PHCUP is grateful to these hard working student volunteers for making the annual auction such a success, and it is also grateful to the faculty, staff, and community members who donated items for auction or sponsored the event.

The fourth annual Indian classical dance competition, Dhirana 2016, was held on February 20th. The Pitt Nrityamala student group created Dhirana to foster Indian classical dance interest in their community and among the University of Pittsburgh student body. This competition provides collegiate classical dance teams from across the nation with a platform to showcase their talents. For the past three years, Pitt Nrityamala has generously donated proceeds from all Dhirana ticket sales to the Birmingham Free Clinic. This year, they raised more than $10,000 for the clinic, bringing their three-year donation total to more than $28,000 in support of our patients! At this year’s competition, the University of Maryland Moksha team took the first place prize, followed by Natya at UC Berkley in second place, and Johns Hopkins University Shakti in third.

The Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations would also like to thank the many volunteers who donate their time, services, and professional skills throughout the year. We would not be able to maintain this vital community resource without your assistance.
