Awards

Lauren Broyles, PhD, RN, was the inaugural recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Young Alumni Award from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

Jaishree Hariharan, MD, MS, received the 2012 Learning Resources Fund Innovative Educational Project Award from the Medical College of Wisconsin, the institution in which she taught before joining the University of Pittsburgh. She received the award for her project entitled "Integrating Chronic Disease Management into the Medicine Ambulatory Curriculum." The project involved developing a curriculum that integrated multi-media educational experiences with face-to-face case discussions and was designed to teach evidence-based diabetes care to fourth-year medical students during their ambulatory medicine clerkship.

Honors

Matthew S. Freiberg, MD, MSc, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the VA Ischemic Heart Disease Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (IHD-QUERI). The mission of QUERI is to enhance the quality, outcomes, and efficiency of VA health care by systematically translating and implementing clinical research findings and evidence-based recommendations into routine clinical practice.

Adam Gordon, MD, MPH, was appointed editor-in-chief of Substance Abuse, the journal of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse.

Bruce L. Rollman, MD, MPH, was invited to be a visiting professor at the Cleveland Clinic from October 31 to November 2, 2012. While in Cleveland, he presented his team's research on depression and heart disease and on using online social media to treat depression and anxiety disorders in primary care settings.

Eleanor (Bimla) Schwarz, MD, MS, was invited to join the editorial board of Contraception, the official journal of the Society of Family Planning. She was also invited to give the following lectures:

  • "The Acceptability and Effectiveness of a Nonhormonal Intrauterine Device for Emergency Contraception and Beyond...," Office of Population Affairs Region IV Title X Annual Meeting, Rizzo Center, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, September 2012.
  • "The Opportunity of a Lifetime: Lactation and Maternal Health," Leo J. Dunn Lecturer, Symposium on Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, October 2012.
  • "Breastfeeding and Maternal Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease," Iberoamerican Conference on Breastfeeding, Granada, Spain, December 2012.
