Professor of Medicine

Congratulations to Ken Smith, MD, MS, who was recently promoted to professor of medicine. Dr. Smith holds a secondary appointment in clinical and translational science and is a core faculty member of the Center for Research on Health Care. He joined the University of Pittsburgh in 2001 as Interim Director of the Section of Hospital Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and since that time has successfully changed his career path from clinician-educator to clinician-investigator while still maintaining many clinical and research educational roles. In addition, he is an associate editor of the journal Medical Decision Making. Dr. Smith received his MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1979, completed his residency training at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1982, and obtained in MS in Clinical Research at the University of Pittsburgh in 2005. His research centers on the cost-effectiveness of common medical interventions, most notably on adult pneumococcal and varicella vaccination. He has published in many other areas, including pelvic inflammatory disease, influenza management strategies, diabetes prevention and treatment, VA formulary decisions, anticoagulation management, and hospital-physician communication.
