Recruitment of Residents, 20102011

Once again, we enjoyed a successful year of recruiting residents to our training programs at UPMC Montefiore and UPMC Shadyside.

Congratulations to all of the people who worked hard on this effort, including the following: Steven Shapiro, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine; John J. Reilly Jr., MD, vice chair for clinical affairs; Wishwa Kapoor, MD, MPH, vice chair for education; Raquel Buranosky, MD, MPH, director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Montefiore; Dario Torre, MD, MPH, PhD, track director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Shadyside; D. Michael Elnicki, MD, interim director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UPMC Shadyside; Alda Gonzaga, MD, MS, director of the Medicine-Pediatrics Training Program at UPMC Montefiore; Julie McCausland, MD, MS, director of the Transitional Year Program at UPMC Montefiore; Gary Tabas, MD, director of the Transitional Year Program at UPMC Shadyside; William Lamb, DO, director of the Osteopathic Internship Program at UPMC Shadyside; the staff of the Office of Education; and the faculty, chief residents, and housestaff who participated in the recruitment effort.

At UPMC Montefiore:

  • The Categorical Program had 1,818 applicants, of whom 380 were interviewed, 367 were ranked, and 33 were matched.
  • The Preliminary Program had 427 applicants, of whom 67 were interviewed, 65 were ranked, and 5 were matched. The preliminary program had to scramble for 4 positions.
  • The International Scholars Program had 350 applicants, of whom 30 were interviewed and 6 were selected outside the match.
  • The Medicine-Pediatrics Training Program had 288 applicants, of whom 62 were interviewed, 59 were ranked, and 4 were matched.
  • The Transitional Year Program had 448 applicants, of whom 85 were interviewed, 78 were ranked, and 8 were matched.

At UPMC Shadyside:

  • The Categorical Program had 1,494 applicants, of whom 109 were interviewed, 69 were ranked, and 8 were matched.
  • The Transitional Year Program had 397 applicants, of whom 54 were interviewed, 54 were ranked, and 6 were matched.
  • The Osteopathic Internship Program had 48 applicants, of whom 21 were interviewed and 4 were matched.
