UPMC Endowed Chair in General Internal Medicine

Bruce L. Rollman, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry, Biomedical Informatics, and Clinical and Translational Science and Director of the Center for Behavioral Health and Smart Technology, has been honored with the UPMC Endowed Chair in General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Rollman joined the Division of General Internal Medicine in July 1995 following the completion of a fellowship in General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on developing novel interventions to treat depression and anxiety disorders in non-psychiatric settings, and he has been principal investigator on six NIH-funded R01 clinical trials including the Online Treatment for Mood and Anxiety Disorders Trial, which evaluated the impact of incorporating a computerized cognitive behavioral therapy program and Internet support group into a collaborative care intervention, as well as the Hopeful Heart Trial, which is presently testing the effectiveness of a “blended" collaborative care model for treating heart failure and depression simultaneously.

Last year, with support from the Department of Medicine and UPMC, Dr. Rollman launched the cross-disciplinary Center for Behavioral Health and Smart Technology, the goals of which are to: (1) link faculty and staff across the Schools of the Health Sciences, UPMC, Carnegie Mellon University, foundations, and the local entrepreneurial community to promote new collaborations; and (2) support the next generation of innovators who will create, test, and disseminate scalable solutions for some of the most common, challenging, and costly behavioral health problems at the intersection of clinical medicine, health services research, and computer science. On November 10 to 11, the Center hosted its 2nd Health Technology Conference in conjunction with the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business.
