Director of Palliative Care Research within the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics

Yael Schenker, MD, MAS, Assistant Professor of Medicine, is the Director of Palliative Care Research within the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Schenker earned her MD at the University of California, San Francisco and completed a general internal medicine fellowship there before joining the Division in 2010 as a junior faculty member. Her research focuses on surrogate decision making and serious illnesses, as well as developing new models of palliative care. Dr. Schenker also has been a leader in developing ways to promote palliative care in oncology given the national workforce shortage of palliative care subspecialists.

Dr. Schenker has won awards for her research as both a fellow and a faculty member and has received funding from federal and individual foundations. She was awarded the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine Junior Scholar Award, and nationally, she won the prestigious National Palliative Care Research Center Career Development Award.

In Dr. Schenker’s new role, she will work with a group of interdisciplinary researchers within the University dedicated to improving palliative care for seriously ill patients. She will work to foster collaboration across academic communities to advance the field of palliative care and to provide mentorship and training opportunities for students, fellows, and junior faculty committed to palliative care research.
