2012 General Internal Medicine and Palliative Care Fellowships

Anna Donovan, MD, and Holly Thomas, MD, joined the division as internal medicine fellows and clinical instructors of medicine.

  • Dr. Donovan earned a BA in biology from Grinnell College in 2001. She was an instructor for Summit Educational Group in Maryland before attending West Virginia University School of Medicine, where she earned an MD in 2008. She completed an internal medicine residency in the Women's Health Track at UPMC in 2011 and then served for a year as a chief medical resident.
  • Dr. Thomas received a BA in Renaissance studies from Yale University in 2005 and an MD with a concentration in women's health from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2009. She completed her residency training at University of California, Los Angeles, in 2012.

Michelle Freeman, MD, Scott Freeman, MD, Brian McMichael, MD, and Lisa Podgurski, MD, all joined the division as hospice and palliative medicine fellows in the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics, and all four will be working toward an MS in medical education during their fellowship period.

  • Dr. Michelle Freeman received a BS in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2005 and an MD from Albany Medical College in 2008. She completed her internal medicine/pediatrics residency at UPMC in 2012.
  • Dr. Scott Freeman received a BA in geography from Dartmouth College in 1996, worked from 1996 to 2000 in New York and Boston, completed a premed certificate program at Mills College in 2002, and then worked on research projects in California from 2002 until 2004. He received his MD from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in 2008 and completed his internal medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in 2011. Before coming to Pittsburgh, he served as a hospitalist at Mainline Health Systems in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.
  • Dr. McMichael received a BA in psychology from Chapman University in California in 1991, completed subsequent coursework at California State University in Fullerton, and received an MD from the University of California at Irvine in 2007. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Tufts Medical Center in Boston before coming to Pittsburgh.
  • Dr. Podgurski received a BS in biology, psychology, and medical anthropology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2003 and then attended Harvard Medical School, where she participated in the Cambridge Integrated Clerkship Pilot Program and received her MD in 2009. She completed her internal medicine residency at UPMC in 2012.
