Professional Recognition

Mark Roberts, MD, MPP, received a 2009 Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award during the 33rd Honors Convocation at the University of Pittsburgh. According to Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg, the honor recognized the commitment of Dr. Roberts to the education of students in the three schools in which he has appointments: the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Public Health, and the School of Engineering. This award is the University's highest teaching award.

Michael J. Fine, MD, MSc, received notification that he has been elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP), a long-standing professional association dedicated to advancing clinical medicine through scientific experiment and discovery. Each year, 60 individuals are recognized for their excellence in the pursuit of this goal through nomination and subsequent election by the Council of the AAP. Dr. Fine and his fellow newly elected AAP members will join their colleagues at the annual meeting in April 2009.

Kenneth J. Smith, MD, MS, accepted an invitation to be an associate editor for Medical Decision Making. The journal appointed him for a 5-year term.

Robert Arnold, MD, along with Anthony Back of the University of Washington and John Tulsky of Duke University, recently authored a book entitled Mastering Communication with Seriously Ill Patients: Balancing Honesty with Empathy and Hope. Bruce Rollman, MD, MPH, and Bea Herbeck Belnap, PhD, traveled to Chicago for the 67th Annual Meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society to deliver a 1-hour symposium presentation entitled "The Bypassing the Blues Trial: Telephone-Delivered Collaborative Care for Treating Post-CABG Depression" on March 5, 2009. This was the first public presentation of outcomes data from their trial. For further information, click here.
