Educational Programs
The faculty members of the Division have extensive teaching responsibilities, both in the Department of Medicine and in the School of Medicine.
Medical Students
Division faculty serve as Course Director and Co-director for the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Block Course for first year medical students. During the MS-2 year faculty members teach in the Integrated Case Studies Course. During the MS-3 year faculty members teach students rotating through the Medicine Clerkship as medicine attendings or as proctors for Physical Diagnosis. During the MS-4 year 6-10 students choose the 4-week Rheumatology elective and are supervised daily by faculty.
Medical Residents
Interns and more senior medicine residents rotate on the Rheumatology service for 2-4 weeks, participating in all of our clinical and teaching activities. We currently support residents from Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as visiting residents from other medical centers. We participate in the yearly resident lecture. Finally, one faculty member reviews rheumatology-specific MKSAP questions with the medical residents during 3 sessions on a yearly basis.
Rheumatology Fellows
Our clinical training component for fellows includes a comprehensive didactic curriculum (weekly Grand Rounds, Immunology Lecture Series, Journal Club, Clinical Didactic Conference, Radiology Conference) with extensive practical/clinical experience including close supervision and contact between fellows in training and academic faculty. We currently have 6 clinical fellows (3 first year, 3 second year). The first year is predominantly clinical with 6 months on the inpatient acute consultation service. Fellows are also assigned one month in the Division's Immunology Laboratory. Continuity of care clinical experience (2 continuity clinics weekly) is provided through both years of fellowship training, but the second year is devoted to a combination of clinical and research (basic or clinical) activities. A "Visiting Professor" program (6-10 visitors) enhances fellowship training.

Other Activities and Unique Programs
Rheumatology faculty members participate is mentoring medical students throughout their medical school careers as part of the F.A.S.T. program. Several faculty members advise medical students in their 2nd and 4th years regarding scheduling and career planning. We currently have faculty representation on medical student committees including the Medical Student Interview Committee, Promotions Committee, Curriculum Committee and the Medical Student Retention Committee. Faculty members allow interested medical students to "shadow" them both on the inpatient service and in the outpatient office. We have developed a Medical Student Interest Group as a means of introducing our subspecialty to interested students who may be considering a future clinical and/or research career in Rheumatology. A unique summer research/clinical program provides the opportunity for medical students between their 1st and 2nd years to participate in American College of Rheumatology-sponsored clinical and research preceptorships.
