Diversity and Inclusion

The University of Pittsburgh affirms and actively promotes the rights of all individuals to equal opportunity in education and employment without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, age, religion, marital status, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or any other protected class.

GME (Graduate Medical Education) at UPMC is committed to training excellent physicians from diverse backgrounds in a model of patient-centered care, which builds a foundation of high-value care, desirable clinical outcomes, and scientific knowledge that improves health.

The Pitt Department of Medicine has a dedicated Office of Diversity and Inclusion that organizes a number of initiatives for faculty and trainees:

  1. Reach for the Stars- A bimonthly dinner series for underrepresented faculty members to meet University leaders.
  2. Medfam- Quarterly dinners and service opportunities organized to join med students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

The Pitt School of Medicine organizes an annual Toast for Diversity celebration to celebrate the accomplishments of diverse faculty and trainees.

Furthermore, the University of Pittsburgh is a site for the BRIM- Bias Reduction in Internal Medicine. This national initiative, spearheaded by the University of Wisconsin, seeks to reduce implicit bias in internal medicine departments and to build a culture of diversity and inclusion. https://brim.medicine.wisc.edu/

In keeping with these tenets, the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology has encouraged its faculty members to undergo implicit bias training to inform their approach towards recruiting and educating trainees. https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/education.htm
