Research
The Department of Medicine supports a broad array of exceptional research programs featuring many nationally known academic physicians and scientists.
Our basic, translational, and clinical research programs continue to grow rapidly. We are ranked 17th nationally in NIH funding among Departments of Internal Medicine. Our goal is to rank in the top 5 nationally. Research funding in all areas has doubled over the past four years, and we have seen our largest increase in federal funding.
Research support has increased from $20,000,000 (total dollars) in FY97 to more than $82,000,000 in FY05. The current distribution by sponsor includes 67% federal, 23% pharmaceutical, and 10% society, foundation and miscellaneous other state and local agencies.
Recognition of our outstanding research programs is attested by the election of our faculty members to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. With these most recent elections and new appointments, the School of Medicine now has 37 members of the ASCI, a striking increase in the membership with election of 10 faculty member within the last three years.
