Training

Our fellowship program offers an in-depth experience at a high volume transplant center in a collegial environment that emphasizes quality in patient care, education, and research. Fellows will receive at least six months of clinical training in the inpatient and outpatient management of kidney, kidney/ pancreas, and kidney/ liver recipients including pre-transplant evaluation of recipient candidates and living donors, management of waitlisted pre-transplant patients, immediate and long-term management of kidney and pancreas transplant recipients and the care of extra-renal (liver, lung, heart, multi-visceral) transplant patients with kidney disease. Transplant nephrology trainees will learn to perform transplant renal biopsies and interpret histology, manage immunosuppression from the time of transplant, and an additional six months will offer a choice of elective experiences in transplant pathology, tissue typing, transplant infectious diseases, extra-renal organ transplant, radiology, transplant administration and the transplant intensive care unit. STI/UPMC is actively involved in cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research. Trainees are expected to participate in clinical and/ or basic science research under the supervision of one of our dynamic and experienced faculty mentors.

The educational program includes structured didactics with a lecture series that covers important topics in transplantation, weekly Waitlist, Selection, Research, and Biopsy conferences, biweekly Morbidity and Mortality, Grand Rounds, and Journal Clubs, and didactic activities available through the Division of Nephrology.
