Bio

Dr. Duncan was recruited by the Pulmonary Division at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990 to provide clinical service for the Lung Transplantation program. In 1992 he accepted a post-doctoral fellowship in Cellular and Molecular Immunology at the Scripps Research Institute. Subsequent appointments there included Senior Research Associate in 1995 and Assistant Professor in 1998. Dr. Duncan also served as an Attending Physician in the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department at the Scripps Clinic during this period. He moved back to the University of Pittsburgh in the spring of 2001 and is a Professor in the Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Division. Dr. Duncan's research activities are focused on the role of T-cell in lung diseases, as well as induction of antigen specific tolerance.

Academic and Research Interests

Dr. Duncan has longstanding interests in the diagnosis and management of pulmonary disorders.  His research aims to understand the role of adaptive immunity in the pathogenesis of COPD, IPF and lung transplant rejection.  He currently sees patients on the Pulmonary Consult Service and Medical Intensive Care Unit.

Complement (C3) deposition in lungs of patients with severe COPD.  C3 stains red against the blue cellular background in alveolar septa of a representative COPD lung section.

Indirect immunofluorescence assay used to evaluate for the presence of IgG autoantibodies against human primary pulmonary airway epithelial cells. Fluorescent green denotes IgG autoantibody binding to these cells.
