Profile
Dr. Mellors is a tenured Professor of Medicine, Pathology, and Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, and Chief of the Infectious Diseases Division. He directs the primary care & clinical research activities in HIV/AIDS at UPMC Health System, providing care to over 1000 HIV-infected individuals.

He is the PI on the Pgh site for the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, conducting pivotal trials of new antiretrovirals, including protease inhibitors, triple drug combinations, & combination protease inhibitors.

His research as an investigator on the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study provided insight into the relationship between viral load and disease outcome. His work in this area has helped define the genetic and biochemical basis for HIV resistance. His lab focused on the problem of HIV resistance to antiretroviral drugs & developed recombinant retroviral systems to detect drug resistant HIV.

Pittsburgh Magazine named Dr. Mellors as one of the "Best Doctors of 2012" in the May issue.
