Profile
Postoperative ileus is the primary concentration of Dr. Bauer's research. Dr. Bauer's lab has demonstrated that there is, in the normal intestine, an extraordinarily dense network of macrophages within the intestinal muscularis. Dr. Bauer has designed a sequential series of experiments to investigate if postoperative ileus is due to molecular and inflammatory events set into motion as a result of gut manipulation during surgery. Data suggest that surgical manipulation of the intestine results in the activation of the dense resident muscularis macrophage network, transcription factor phosphorylation, gene induction and leukocyte recruitment. These molecular events then lead to the secretion of kinetic substances (nitric oxide and prostaglandins) and the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Currently, we are investigating anti-inflammatory pathways with an eye to use the pre-emptive activation of the anti-inflammatory pathways to avert the development of postoperative ileus.
