Dr. Albers’ research investigates how growth factors, 1) increase sensory neuron survival during development, 2) regulate expression of channel proteins involved in sensitivity and pain, 3) modulate the perception and processing of pain signaling, and 4) affect aging of sensory neurons and their receptor end organs. Her ultimate goal is to understand the intrinsic relationship between target-tissue production of neurotrophic factors and sensory neuron function in hopes of using these compounds to treat disorders of the sensory system such as persistent pain syndromes, neuropathies and degenerative changes associated with aging.
