Profile
Dr. DeLany received his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from The Ohio State University in 1986. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago with a focus on stable isotope methodology, he was recruited to establish a stable isotope laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, where he was engaged in the study of energy metabolism, obesity and obesity related diseases for the next 16 years.

While Dr. DeLany continues his research in energy metabolism, since joining the faculty of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2005, a new focus is the study of substrate utilization, ectopic fat accumulation, insulin sensitivity, skeletal muscle characteristics and mitochondrial function as they relate to the increased risk of developement of diabetes in African-American women.

In addition, as the Director of the Mass Spectrometry Lab, Dr. DeLany provides the scientific leadership and technical expertise for the Lab to be able to function as a "core laboratory" for stable isotope methodologies and quantification of blood and tissue compounds for investigators within the University of Pittsburgh community as well as outside investigators who need these services.
