2017 SGIM Awards

Alda Maria Gonzaga has won the Mid-Career Education Mentorship Award. This award recognizes an outstanding mid-career educator nationally who is actively engaged in education, research and mentorship of junior clinician educators. The criteria for the award includes developing a supportive environment for teaching and scholarship, commitment to mentorship including track record of success, and teaching skills such as curricular design, teaching methods and program assistance.

Since receiving a faculty appointment in 2006, Dr. Gonzaga has demonstrated a sincere dedication to mentorship, offering support to those at any stage of their career—including medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Even while still a fellow in the women’s health track of our fellowship program, she was already mentoring two first-year residents. Whether pertaining to clinical responsibilities or research projects, work-life balance or career advice, Dr. Gonzaga does whatever she can to help her mentees achieve success.

As director of the internal medicine-pediatrics residency program, Dr. Gonzaga fosters a familial ethos and a supportive environment in her program. She advocates for her residents and mentees whenever possible, ensuring that they have the opportunity to pursue unique electives and that their rotations are valuable educational experiences. She encourages the residents to be successful in all aspects of their life, and spends a great deal of time and energy—much of it behind the scenes—establishing an environment in which they can succeed and flourish.

Dr. Gonzaga helps those whom she mentors to improve in every aspect of their career. She exhibits a passion for medical education, and strives to foster that same love in her trainees by empowering them to be teachers and leaders in medical education. She advises residents preparing oral and poster presentations, and offers feedback to residents preparing to give their “senior talks.” Dr. Gonzaga also guides chief residents as they learn how to manage their administrative responsibilities and their new roles as advocates and liaisons.

Dr. Gonzaga also serves as a research mentor in a number of ways. She mentors fellows developing curriculum projects, helping them anticipate potential problems while also giving them the freedom to determine how to solve those problems and meet deadlines. She also helps mentees design, find funding for, implement, and assess projects. She attends sessions and presentations of works in progress, and provides pointed and insightful feedback as to how her mentees could continue to improve. And she connects residents and fellows with faculty who are looking for collaborators in similar research, doing so with foresight and genuine interest.

Dr. Gonzaga also supports junior faculty members, often providing thoughtful, unbiased advice about potential job opportunities or offers. She has also been an academic advisor for over a decade for Pitt medical students who are interested in the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program, as well as an advisor in the Faculty and Students Together (FAST) Program.
