Professional Recognition


Yael Schenker, MD, is the recipient of the 2013 University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) Junior Scholar Award in Population-Based Cancer Research. Dr. Schenker gave a presentation at the UPCI Scientific Retreat at the Greensburg Campus of the University of Pittsburgh on June 20, 2014, where she received her award.

Anna Marie White Lewarchik, MD, received the Medicine-Pediatrics Program Directors Association (MPPDA) 2014 Walter W. Tunnessen Jr, MD, Award at the association’s annual meeting in April. This award was established in 2002 in honor of Dr. Tunnessen’s dedication and gifts as an educator, clinician, and advocate for children. Dr. Lewarchik was nominated by her program director, Alda Maria Gonzaga, MD.

Kaleab Abebe, PhD; Natalia Morone, MD, MS; and Sonya Borrero, MD, MS, received the Chancellor’s Affirmative Action Award in July. They received it for their work in the Career Education and Enhancement for Healthcare Diversity (CEED) Program. The CEED Program has developed strategies to retain and recruit underrepresented minority investigators. The program is an integral part of the Institute for Clinical Research Education and the Division and supports junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and medical students in developing and accelerating their careers in research.

Achievement & Honors

Lisa Podgurski, MD, was appointed as Medical Director of the palliative care clinical services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC effective July 1, 2014. Dr. Podgurski assumes this role from Winifred Teuteberg, MD.

Sonya Borrero, MD, MS, was asked to serve on the Adagio Health Medical Standards Committee.

Congratulations to Mahesh Gajendran, MD, MPH, Clinical Instructor of Medicine, who completed his master’s in public health from the University of Pittsburgh.

Congratulations to Kishore Vipperla, MD, FACP, who was elected to the Fellowship of the American College of Physicians.

Bruce L. Rollman, MD, MPH, was a visiting professor at Columbia University May 8-9 at the Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health and the School of Social Work where he gave a presentation entitled “Online Treatments for Mood and Anxiety Disorders.” Dr. Rollman was a visiting professor at Columbia University again July 17-18 at the Department of Psychiatry and New York Psychiatric Institute where he gave a presentation entitled “Collaborative Care for Mood and Anxiety Disorders 3.0.” He also met individually with a number of faculty members.

Making News

Congratulations to Walid Gellad, MD, MPH, on Academy Health’s recognition of his paper, “Brand-Name Prescription Drug Use among Veterans Affairs and Medicare Part D Patients with Diabetes,” as a Noteworthy Article in conjunction with their 2014 Article-of-the-Year Award.

Research by Leslie Hausmann, PhD, on “Pain Reduction via Positive Psychology and the Web,” was featured in the nationally disseminated spring 2014 issue of VA Research Currents.

APDIM Spring Conference 2014

This year’s spring conference of the Associate Program Directors for Internal Medicine was held in April at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Once again, the Division of General Internal Medicine was well represented at the annual meeting.
