Subject: Variation in Drug Spending and Diffusion of New Drugs in Medicaid: A Case Study of Pennsylvania.
Principal Investigator: Walid F. Gellad, MD, MPH (with Julie Donohue, PhD).
Sponsor: RandľUniversity of Pittsburgh Health Institute.
Purpose: The goal of this pilot project is to help the commonwealth of Pennsylvania improve the cost-effective use of prescription medications by measuring geographic variation in prescription spending and the speed of adoption of new drugs.

Subject: Examining Contraceptive Use and Unmet Need among Women Veterans.
Principal Investigator: Sonya Borrero, MD, MS.
Sponsor: VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D).
Purpose: This study will provide a necessary and critical needs assessment to help guide program and policy development and steer quality improvement efforts regarding contraceptive care in the VA. The study will also illuminate specific pathways for intervention to improve contraceptive use and decrease unintended pregnancy for all women veterans.

Subject: Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations (PHCUP).
Principal Investigator: Thuy Bui, MD (Mary Herbert, MS, MPH, Project Director).
Sponsor: Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Purpose: This 2-year community primary care challenge grant will focus on increasing access to primary health care services for uninsured individuals by hiring a full-time nurse and by providing support of a physician for 12 hours a week at the PHCUP's Birmingham Free Clinic. Matching funds will be supported through the Division of General Internal Medicine.
