Subject: Comparative Effectiveness and Cost-Effectiveness of Osteoporosis Screening Strategies.
Principal Investigator: Smita Nayak, MD.
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
Purpose: Osteoporosis affects 10 million people in the United States and is associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and costs. The goal of this research is to identify the most effective and cost-effective osteoporosis population screening strategies that can be implemented to improve health outcomes in older women and men.

Subject: Geriatric Education Centers of Pennsylvania.
Principal Investigator: Robert Arnold, MD.
Sponsor: Health Resources and Services Administration.
Purpose: This 5-year grant will be used to educate nursing home clinicians about evidence-based palliative care interventions in an effort to improve the quality of life of nursing home residents.

Subject: End of Life in Very Old Age.
Principal Investigator: Robert Arnold, MD.
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health.
Purpose: This prospective study will follow the clinical course of individuals who were part of the Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health-ABC) cohort and are now 85 years or older. The objectives are to characterize the clinical trajectories and risk of death in very old age, to assess participant and proxy decision making, and to examine predictors of hospitalization and emergency department care.
