The University of Pittsburgh has offered fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine for over 4 decades. Throughout, UPMC has made it a priority to provide broad, high quality training in cardiovascular medicine. As the science and practice of cardiology have evolved, so too has the training offered to our fellows. Fellows have extensive exposure to state of the art cardiovascular imaging, interventional and electrophysiological techniques, while remaining grounded in the disciplines of history taking and physical diagnosis. Clinical rotations are performed alongside accomplished faculty valued for their teaching skill, and are supplemented with an extensive series of lectures and conferences covering all major areas of cardiovascular medicine. A meaningful research effort is mandated for all fellows, and may be taken in any of a number of clinical, basic or translational areas.

A special emphasis is placed on ensuring that each fellow establishes a mutually beneficial relationship with a faculty mentor. This relationship most commonly centers on supervision of the fellow's research project, but also importantly includes career counseling and other support of the fellow's development. Another distinguishing feature of the program is an effort to tailor each fellow's schedule to his or her needs. While aspects of the training program's structure must be adhered to, ample elective time is provided to allow fellows to pursue individual interests.
