Research Interest
Dr. Mulukutla has established himself as a well-recognized investigator in the field of cardiovascular outcomes research. His early involvement with the Dynamic Registry has resulted in several high-impact publications. He has contributed several other papers based upon the Dynamic Registry as first author, senior author, and co-author, which has earned him recognition in the Interventional Cardiology community. It was this work that largely led him to be recognized by Cardiovascular Research Technologies as one of the nation’s “Young Leaders” in 2009.
He has taken on an increased role in using system wide data across the UPMC Health System to identify opportunities for operational improvements and efficiencies within the Heart and Vascular Institute while simultaneously providing high level care to our patients. He focuses on the evaluation of cardiovascular outcomes with focus on clinical end points, cost-effectiveness, patient preferences, and quality of life as well as issues surrounding the development, introduction, and use of medical technology.
Currently, he oversees HVI Analytics and directs the HVI Center for Outcomes and Innovation. This has been responsible for the foundation for several initiatives across the health system to improve care as well as academic and research activities in outcomes across HVI. In this role, him and his team in collaboration with UPMC Clinical Analytics help others within HVI in the creation of dashboards to understand care processes and in developing datasets for analysis. These revolve around areas of clinical decision-making, readmissions in heart failure populations, treatment of complex coronary artery disease, among others.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Mulukutla's clinical area of interest is in Interventional Cardiology. His focus is on the treatment of coronary artery disease and the risk factors that lead to this condition, including hyperlipidemia, hypertension among others. He has an interest in treating patients with complex coronary disease and those presenting with acute myocardial infarction.
Educational Interest
Dr. Mulukutla's educational interest revolves around general and interventional cardiology. He is dedicated to teaching fellows in the cardiac catheterization environment where he works closely with them in training them in both the technical and interpretive aspects of coronary angiography and interventions. In addition, he has spent time in didactic teaching to general and interventional fellows. He has worked with 2nd year medical students during their Cardiology subsection. Moreover, Dr. Mulukutla serves as a mentor for numerous medical students, residents, fellows, and he serves on the Masters and PhD thesis committees for numerous students in the Graduate School of Public Health.
