Dr. Givelber received her M.D. in 1990 from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected to AOA. She trained in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Boston University. During her fellowship she completed additional coursework in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine, and serves as the associate director of the pulmonary fellowship, and the director of the Evidence-Based Residency Curriculum for the internal medicine residency program.
Dr. Givelber splits her clinical time between inpatient consultation, and outpatient consultation and ongoing care of all types of lung disease. She has particular interest in sleep disorders, and the relation between sleep apnea and other medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and diabetes.
Dr. Givelber’s academic focus is in clinical education at the medical student, resident and fellow level. She teaches critical appraisal of the medical literature, and techniques to apply research studies to the care of individual patients.

Obesity is the major risk factor for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, but demographic factors such as older age and male gender, anthropomorphic features including large tonsils or retrognathia, and comorbid medical conditions such as stroke or congestive heart failure also increase the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing. |
