Bio

Dr. Donahoe completed medical school training at Hahnemann University in 1983 and residency and fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989.  He joined the faculty in 1989 as as Assistant Professor of Medicine and was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 1995.  He served as the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit since 1989.  Interim Division Chief from 1996-2000 and Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs since 2001.  

During his tenure, he has worked with the leadership of Drs. Rogers and Choi and the faculty leadership, to expand the clinical programs of the Division to remarkable growth including expansion from an 8 bed MICU to the current 32 MICU beds, development of a 23 bed medical stepdown unit, expansion from < 5000 outpatient visits per year to almost 15,000 visits in the past year, and the growth and development of focused clinical programs in asthma and allergy, adult cystic fibrosis, copd, interstitial lung disease, lung transplantation, and sleep medicine.   

Dr. Donahoe received two faculty teaching awards from the medicine residents in 1996 and 2005. He also received the Department of Medicine Donald S Fraley award for outstanding clinical faculty in 2003 and the American Thoracic Society Outstanding Clinician Award in 2006.  

Clinical Interests

Dr. Donahoe has a broad range of clinical research interests in the critically ill patient population including the management of chronically critically ill  patients, ARDS, and hospital quality improvement.  Additional clinical research interest in clinical trial design and implementation especially in COPD.

Dr. Donahoe has been chosen as one of Pittsburgh's "Most Distinguished Doctors" (2008) and one of "Pittsburgh's Best Doctors" (2002) by Pittsburgh Magazine.
