Bio

Sharon Camhi received her M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in 1988. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA and her fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. While at Hopkins, she worked under the mentorship of Augustine M.K. Choi, MD. After fellowship, Dr. Camhi joined the faculty at the University of Arizona and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care Systems in Tucson, AZ where she served at the Director of the Tucson VA Medical ICU. She subsequently moved to Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY where she was Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Unit. Dr. Camhi joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 2007 and serves as the Director of the Medical ICU at the Pittsburgh VA.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Camhi’s clinical interests include the care of patients with acute lung injury, the care of chronically critically ill patients who require prolonged mechanical ventilation, and palliative care and end of life decision-making. She is involved in redesigning and improving the resident training program in the ICU at the Pittsburgh VA.

Academic and Research Interests

In the last few years, Dr. Camhi’s research has focused on communication and end of life decision-making in chronically critically ill patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation. She is currently involved in a VA-funded effort to enhance palliative care services in the critical care units at the Pittsburgh VA.
