WHAT & WHERE WAS YOUR RESIDENCY?

I did a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at UPMC and Children’s Hospital of UPMC here in Pittsburgh.

Originally from Pittsburgh, but grew up mostly in Cincinnati.

College: Penn State (BA-Sociology, BS-Science)
MD: Vanderbilt University
MS: Medical Education, University of Pittsburgh

GIM FELLOWSHIP TYPE

Medical Education, Med-Peds Track

WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW

I am the Associate Program director for the Med Peds program here at UPMC. Clinically, I currently work through both the Division of General Internal Medicine and its pediatric equivalent, General Academic Pediatrics, as combined Med-Peds clinician-educator. In addition, I am the medical director the resident Med-Peds practice at Turtle Creek.

REFLECTIONS ON YOUR TRAINING

There are multiple aspects of the fellowship that I found and continue to find extremely helpful as I have moved on to a faculty position. The formalized didactic program with the Master’s degree afforded me the opportunity to improve my base knowledge and skills as an educator. Additionally having experienced faculty observe my teaching in the outpatient, inpatient and small group settings provided invaluable feedback which I would not have been able to receive going straight to a faculty position.

WHY PITTSBURGH?

I had had family in the area growing up and so had known the city before coming here for residency. Once I moved here for training, I found it a really easy and affordable city to live in. It has great neighborhoods, a variety of things to do outside of work, and a laid back feel which I’ve enjoyed over the years.
