Medical Director of Hospital Medicine for the Division of General Internal Medicine

Gena Walker, MD, has been hired to be the new Medical Director of Hospital Medicine for the Division of General Internal Medicine. She is also being named the Division’s Director of Inpatient Medicine Value and Quality, and receiving an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. She will be starting with us on March 1, 2018.

Dr. Walker is coming to us from the Carolinas Hospitalist Group (in the Carolinas HealthCare System), where she has been practicing since 2007. She is no stranger to Pittsburgh, however, having completed an internal medicine/pediatrics residency here at Pitt, with a year as Chief Resident. Before joining the Carolinas Hospitalist Group, Dr. Walker spent three years as a hospitalist at the Medical University of South Carolina. She earned her medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 2000.

In her ten years with the Carolinas HealthCare System, she has held a number of positions of leadership. Since 2009 she has been the co-director of the hospitalist group at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, a 198-bed acute care hospital in Charlotte, NC. She served for one year as the Chief of Internal Medicine at CMC-Mercy before taking on another position for the hospitalist group in 2013, as co-director of its Pre-operative Medical Assessment Clinic. She most recently held an additional position as Vice Chief of Internal Medicine for the Central Division of the 47-hospital health care system.

Gena has earned several awards for patient care during her career: she made Charlotte Magazine’s annual “Top Doctors List” from 2012 to 2016, was named physician of the year for CMC-Mercy in 2010, and was given the Planetree Physician Champion Award in 2012. Gena has also actively served on several committees in the healthcare system. She has been a long-serving member of the Operations and the Medical Executive Committees for the system’s Central Division, and has chaired the hospitalist group’s Patient Experience Committee since 2014.

Gena has a clinical interest in palliative medicine, and co-authored a needs assessment with Dr. Robert Arnold on pediatric resident education in palliative care, which was published in Pediatrics.
