Thanks from the Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations

The Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations (PHCUP) is grateful to everyone involved in fund-raising efforts to support our community clinics serving the uninsured and other vulnerable groups in Pittsburgh.

Congratulations to Nathan Riley for completing the Rev3 Ironman Triathlon in Sandusky, Ohio, on September 12, 2010. His efforts—better known as the Endure 4 the Uninsured Campaign—included a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all to raise money for the efforts of the Birmingham Free Clinic. The PHCUP, its volunteers, and patients thank Nathan for literally putting his body on the line for a great cause. We would also like to thank the friends and family of Nathan who participated in superhuman events to raise money for the clinic: Mike Santos for his completion of the Lancaster Covered Bridges Tour, Dustin Greene for his completion of the Charleston Distance Run, and Emily Riley for her half-marathon attempt, which, unfortunately, was canceled but nevertheless raised donations that were added to the Endure 4 the Uninsured Campaign. Team Nathan raised $2,573 for the Birmingham Free Clinic.

The PHCUP is also grateful to three a cappella groups—the PalPITTations from the University of Pittsburgh and the Originals and the Soundbytes from Carnegie Mellon University—for the fantastic sounds and energy they contributed during a concert called "Singing for Service!" This concert was held on October 23, 2010, to benefit the Birmingham Free Clinic and was underwritten in part by Dr. Justin Vujevich, Dr. Lauren Jonkman, Dr. Thuy Bui, and the Student National Medical Association of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The concert offered an amazing night of talent and music and raised over $600. Thanks to all who supported and contributed to the event. Be on the lookout for future events from all three a cappella groups.
