Professional Recognition

Robert Arnold, MD, recently joined the Executive Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Institute on Aging. He also gave presentations at the following meetings: the 23rd Annual Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in Barcelona, Spain; the 2010 Kathleen Foley Palliative Care Retreat in Salt Lake City, Utah; the Conference of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare in Phoenix, Arizona; and the Annual Conference of the Center to Advance Palliative Care in Phoenix, Arizona.

Gary Fischer, MD, received a Frank E. Rath Award for Outstanding Leadership in Information Technology and Innovation from the Physician Services Division of UPMC.

Walid Gellad, MD, MPH, was honored by the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety as one of the best peer reviewers.

C. Bernie Good, MD, MPH, received the Under Secretary for Health Pharmacy Award for the Advancement of Pharmacy Programs. This award honors nonpharmacy personnel who have achieved distinction in promoting pharmacy-related objectives designed to enhance the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care. Dr. Good received the award for his collaborative practices with pharmacy, which have led to the expansion and advancements of patient-centric clinical pharmacy services, increased the opportunities for pharmacist-directed research, enhanced medication safety for veterans, and increased medical and pharmacy staff satisfaction.

Adam Gordon, MD, MPH, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Group of the Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI). The mission of QUERI is to enhance the quality outcomes and efficiency of VA health care by systematically translating and implementing clinical research findings and evidence-based recommendations into routine clinical practice.

Bruce Rollman, MD, MPH, received the 2010 Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) Research Award "in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research in the field of psychiatry of the medically ill." The award was presented in November 2010 during the Annual Meeting of the APM, held in Marco Island, Florida. Dr. Rollman was also the leadoff speaker at the 5th Annual Heart-Brain Summit sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic's Bakken Heart-Brain Institute and held in September 2010 in Las Vegas. His talk was entitled "Collaborative Care for Treatment of Depression in Patients with Heart Disease."

Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, MD, MS, was an invited speaker at the 15th Conference of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation, held in Lima, Peru, in October 2010.
