Subject: Same-Day Insertion of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) or Implants for Women Seeking Emergency Contraception (EC) or Pregnancy Testing.
Principal Investigator: Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, MD, MS.
Sponsor: Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Public Health Service.
Purpose: Women seeking EC and walk-in pregnancy testing from Title X clinics are at particularly high risk of unintended pregnancy. However, women seeking these services are rarely offered same-day access to highly effective reversible contraceptives, such as IUDs or contraceptive implants. This study will evaluate the effect of structured counseling about these contraceptives (phase 1) and the offer of these contraceptives (phase 2) on women's knowledge, attitudes, and use of the contraceptives 3 months after they seek EC or pregnancy testing from a Title X family planning clinic.

Subject: Regional Variation in Prescription Use and Spending for Diabetes.
Principal Investigator: Walid F. Gellad, MD, MPH.
Sponsor: Veterans Integrated Service Network 4 (VISN4) Competitive Pilot Project Fund.
Purpose: The identification, understanding, and elimination of unnecessary regional variation in prescribing are important components of quality improvement and key steps to a more efficient system of prescribing in the VA Healthcare System. This pilot project will begin to address this issue by studying regional variation in the use of medications among patients with diabetes.
