Professional Recognition


Mary Herbert, MS, MPH Clinical Director for the Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations in the Division of General Internal Medicine, has been selected by the University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health Alumni Awards Committee to receive the 2014 Margaret F. Gloninger Service Award as part of the school's Distinguished Alumni Awards program. Dean Burke will present the awards as part of the Pitt Public Health first all-alumni reunion weekend on May 17th, 2014.

Leslie Hausmann, PhD was recently recognized by the VAPHS Women's Committee as a Woman of the Month Nominee. This award highlights the outstanding work and dedication of the women at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. As stated in her Woman of the Month nomination, Dr. Hausmann is extremely invested in her work at the VA and gives it "her all" each and every day. She is organized, meticulous and ambitious in all of her research endeavors, which aim to help Veterans, including women Veterans. All nominees are considered for Federal Executive Board's Women of the Year Awards.

Sonya Borrero, MD, MS received the Excellence in Medical Student Research Mentoring Award in recognition of her outstanding mentoring over the course of a University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Scholarly Project.

Achievement & Honors

Walid Gellad, MD, MPH received a letter from the Annuals of Internal Medicine which said in part. "Annals' reputation for excellence depends on our reviewers. We grade the quality of each review and our editors gave the top grade to the work you did for Annals in 2013. We know who our best reviewers are and you are one of them."

Annals of Internal Medicine released a new interactive medical education tool. Under the leadership of Gary Tabas MD, General Internal Medicine faculty collaborated with The Annals of Internal Medicine editors to develop this new Annals Virtual Patient software. This new interactive software can be used to earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credits. Designed to test decision making skills including examination, diagnosis, and treatment of a virtual patient by using a "if this then that" format through a complex simulation. General Medicine faculty who participated in development of this software includes:

Bruce L. Rollman, MD, MPH was invited to be Visiting Professor at Baylor University December 2-3, 2013 where he spoke about "Collaborative Care for Mood and Anxiety Disorders in Primary Care" and "Planning a Career in Clinical Research".

Julie Childers, MD, Michelle Freeman, MD and Lisa Podgurski, MD (with Kathryn Pollak, PhD of Duke University and Colleen Marshall LCSW of Vital Decisions) presented a four-hour preconference workshop entitled "Helping the 'Unreasonable' Patient: Adding Motivational Interviewing Skills to Your Communication Toolkit" at the Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in San Diego, California on March 12, 2014. The workshop was selected from over 400 submitted abstract proposals and was attended by 81 hospice and palliative medicine clinicians.

Bea Herbeck Belnap Ph.D. conducted a 2-day workshop on the implementation of collaborative care for depression at for members of the German Cardiovascular Institute from all over Germany at the Psychosomatic Clinic of the University of Goettingen, Germany. March 31-April 1, 2014

Rosanne Granieri MD, was invited to teach in Kazakhstan, Russia at Nazarbayev University.

Melissa McNeil MD was invited as a Visiting Professor, at University of Minnesota, Grand Rounds in January 2014: Her topic "Teaching Across the Generational Divide." Faculty Development seminar: Managing the Problem Learner. In March Dr. McNeil was a speaker at University of Pittsburgh Women and Science Forum: Her topic was "Lean In: Developing Women Leaders in Academic Medicine."

Mike Elinicki MD was invited as Visiting professor at TKH, Sapporo Japan in February 2014

Bernie Good MD was to invited to an international talk in November 2013: "Risk Share Agreements with Industry", Vancouver Group of Competent Prescription Authorities, Wellington, New Zealand, November 26, 2013

Galen Switzer PhD Presented at the annual Mohler Lecture, sponsored by McPherson College, McPherson, KS. "Helping others common and uncommon acts of altruism" March 2014

Bruce L. Rollman, MD, MPH newest study The Hopeful Heart made news when both the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Trib News did articles regarding the multi-year study and its funding by the National Institutes for Health.
